Sound familiar?

Most businesses call us after one of these.

Your IT provider takes days to call back, and it's someone new every time.

Your "IT guy" moved on, and nobody knows the admin passwords.

A phishing email almost got someone. Or maybe it did.

You're paying for Microsoft licenses and software nobody's sure you use.

The Wi-Fi drops every time the conference room fills up.

Your phones, network and computers are three vendors blaming each other.

None of that is a technology problem. It's an ownership problem. When one team is responsible for everything, things stop falling through the cracks.

Services

From the cloud down to the cable.

Most MSPs stop at the screen. We also handle the phones, the network gear and the wiring behind the wall, so there's one number to call for all of it.

Why Matter of Technology

A local shop that just happens to work everywhere.

We're a small, owner-operated team out of Vancouver, Washington. That's on purpose. Small means you're never just an account number, and the person you talk to is the person doing the work.

Modern tools let us manage an office in Phoenix as closely as one down the street. When something needs hands on site, we take on projects nationwide.

Microsoft 365 & Intune

Taking back control of Microsoft 365 and automating every new device

The problem
The company didn't have clean control of its own Microsoft 365 tenant. Admin access was scattered, security settings were inconsistent, and every new computer took hours of hands-on setup before an employee could use it.
What we did
We took full, documented ownership of the tenant, cleaned up admin roles and licensing, and rolled out Intune with Windows Autopilot. Security policies, encryption and company apps now install automatically the first time someone signs in.
The result
The business owns its accounts and data outright. New laptops ship straight to employees and are ready to work at first sign-in, and every device is encrypted, managed and can be locked or wiped remotely if it's lost.
Low Voltage & Networking

Rebuilding an office network from the cable up

The problem
The office had grown around a tangle of old cabling, unlabeled patch cords and consumer-grade gear. Wi-Fi dropped in meeting rooms, nobody could trace a cable to its jack, and guests shared the same network as company systems.
What we did
We ran and terminated new structured cabling, built out a clean network rack with patch panels and cable management, installed business-grade switching, firewall and ceiling-mounted access points, and separated staff, guest, phone and camera traffic onto their own networks.
The result
Reliable Wi-Fi in every room, a rack anyone can read at a glance, every jack tested and labeled, and full documentation the client keeps. Guest devices can no longer see business systems.
Cloud Services

Moving internal business systems off an aging server, with zero downtime

The problem
Internal corporate systems were running on an end-of-life Ubuntu server with an unmaintained control panel. It was exposed to the internet, overdue for updates, and one bad patch away from going dark.
What we did
We migrated everything to a right-sized cloud environment in its own isolated account, moved DNS under centralized management, and took the server off the open internet entirely using a secure tunnel instead of open ports.
The result
The end-of-life server was retired without any downtime. No inbound ports are exposed to the internet, systems are patched and backed up on a schedule, and the client has a documented environment they fully own.

Background
IT, low voltage & AV

Matter of Technology is run by Matthew Matter. I started it because I kept seeing small businesses get treated like ticket numbers by big IT companies, or left depending on one person who knew everything and documented nothing.

I come at IT from both sides of the wall. Along with managing servers, Microsoft 365 and security, I'm a low voltage and AV contractor, so I know how the network is actually built, not just how it looks from a dashboard.

When you work with us, you know who's handling your systems and you can reach them directly. That's the whole idea.

More about us

FAQ

Straight answers.

Don't see your question? Call us. You'll talk to a person, not a phone tree.

Do you work with businesses outside Washington?

Yes. We support clients across the U.S. Nearly everything we do, from monitoring and patching to Microsoft 365 and help desk, happens remotely. For on-site work, we cover the Portland/Vancouver area day to day and take on projects nationwide.

How much does managed IT cost?

Plans are priced per user, per month. After a free assessment you'll get a flat quote with everything spelled out. Projects and cabling work are quoted separately.

Do I have to sign a long-term contract?

No. Managed plans are month-to-month. If we're not delivering, you shouldn't be stuck with us.

How does switching from our current IT provider work?

We handle the handoff. We collect admin access, document everything we find, and coordinate with your old provider so there's no gap in coverage.

We already have an IT person. Can you still help?

Definitely. We can back up your in-house person with tools, security and after-hours coverage, or take on specific areas like Microsoft 365 or the network.

What happens when something breaks?

Call, email, or submit a request through the client portal. Either way you reach someone who already knows your systems. Requests get logged so there's a record, but you never have to fight a queue to get help.

Already a client?

Check request status, view invoices and pay online in the client portal, or just give us a call.
